10 Tips before you move

You just sold your house...Now what?

It is moving time...Did you pack everything by yourself?

I got some tips for you:

1) Pack a suitcase with cloths for a few days

2) Mark all the boxes

3) Now it is a great time to eliminate anything that you don't need

4) Anything of value you might have- should be transported with your car.

5) Pack in small boxes...

6) Ask the movers to come first thing in the morning...

7) Let the post office, phone co. electric co. etc. know that you are moving

8) Have some family members to watch the movers in different spots...

9) Have a signed contract with the movers.

10) Always deal with a well known mover who is insured...

Joshua,

Good ideas.  I would have also held a yard sale with the neighbors as soon as your house was under contract, to get rid of some stuff and to help offer used items to needy neighbors or other buyers looking for deals.

#5 - definately small boxes for the heavy stuff!

Also, call some friends over and ask them to make a morning of it, making them coffee and lunch as a thanks.  Friends like to help and its a good excuse to get together and exchange contact information before you move away.

Most movers will come look at your house and give you a maximum amount they will charge.  Often it will be less.

Lastly, don't forget about those utilities.  If your house is sold, ensure utilities get turned off or transferred properly on or just after closing date.  If the house is still on the market, let your Realtor know that the utilities will be on and they will help to ensure safety in your vacant home.  If winter comes and water is still on, but the heat is off, this can mean problems.  Talk about your situation with your Realtor and they will be glad to assist!

Great post, but for #1 why do you need a suitcase full of cloths?  Are you planning on wiping down a lot of counters?  :-)

#5 - packing in small boxes is by far the best advice you can ever give anyone that is moving.  Big boxes look great as they hold so much more, but when it is time to lift...ouch!  Small boxes are the weigh (nice pun right!) to go.
