120 Pould Dog

Profile picture for Big Poppy
I have 120 pound dog that we let run around in our bad yard, every spring I try and grow grass, I am successfull but once the dog gets back out there it gets pulled up.  I was thinking of fencing in the front yard and giving the back yard a rest from the dog for a few months to really let thigns grow in.  Any thoughts or other ideas that might work?

We've got two dogs that together add up to 120 pounds, so we've got 2x as many paws as you do.

Our grass does fine in the backyard.   The factors that contribute:

1.  The grass type (as your nursery for the most robust grass).
2.  The amount of exercise the dog(s) get.  Ours get two hours of hard running per day outside the yard so don't spend much time roaming the yard.
3.   Barriers to keep the dog in the areas we wish.   Berms and bushes work with ours, in addition, we've taught them to eliminate in one small section.
4.  Keeping toenails trimmed short.

I think I would just choose one area and designate it the dog zone.  Use a nice thick mulch that can be weeded and cleaned of any doggie remnants easily.  After the dog makes his trail you can rake or blow the mulch back for a fresh look.
