I am US Army Veteran also I am drawing SSI disability back problems on my own I qualify for $100,000 at 5.5 % in my county of San Diego there are first time home buyer incentives.  Can anybody advise me where and how I should proceed to get my own place to live? I am 52 and have some 401 savings. I feel pressured to make move I just dont know what the smartest choice for me is. Fortunately prices have been dropping...I have excellant credit and need to make something happen very soon...but what? Thanks in advance for your thoughts and comments.

Welcome.    Help us understand "I feel pressured to make move I just don't know what the smartest choice for me is."

At the moment, housing prices have been plummeting with California being among the worst.

Is this the best time to buy?    When one gets qualified, often the amount they qualify you for is a stretch.    Do you have any input from the lender how much your actual out of pocket costs will be monthly?   In addition to the mortgage, there will be insurance and tax costs.       Does that leave you enough for the rest of life (food, clothing, entertainment etc).

Tapping into 401k for housing is not a wise move.  If you are on disability at this point, paying it will back will be tough.

Have you investigated what $100k will buy in your area?   Are these places you are willing to live for many years?
