Any success stories from using biofuel along with heating oil?

Profile picture for iluvmyfamily
I'm in Central PA and just today blended biofuel (refined from Soybeans) in with my petroleum heating oil. It is a little less than a 15% blend. Are there any experienced users of biofuel out there? Please be honest.

Biomass is pretty common, at least out here in Colorado, in the form of Pellet Stoves. Pellets are generally purchased in 20-40 lb bags, poured into hoppers, and then automatically burned at an adjustable rate. Different stoves have different features, and are available as freestanding pellet stoves, fireplace inserts, and probably also centralized furnaces...

I use a pellet stove. I just wish I'd sprung for a pellet furnace. Works great. I've wanted to buy a CS Lister Diesel engine ( http://www.centralmainediesel.com/ )  to run on WVO as a CHP system (combined Heat and Power). Haven't done it as of yet.

I've been told actual biodiesel runs just fine on an oil furnace. Since I have a gas furnace, I haven't tried it myself, but the folk at the link below have:

Best of luck.

Don't forget solar heating, it should be able to stretch heating oil use out.

PA, I am an experienced biofuel/oil guy. Each year, after thanksgiving, i put out a craigslist ad, freecycle, and collect turkey fryer oil. People pitch in when they know what you are doing. I filter it at 200 microns, easy, thats a little less than nylons, and heat it up with methanol and hydroxide. After washing off the glycerol and taking the aqueous layers off, you have about 50-100 liters of biodiesel each year. I run it into the system first, then geta fill of oil. Its like 10 percent BD. Have done this for four years, runs great. The only real outlay is Work and getting methanol, and the total cost runs about 2 bucks a gallon. C
