Anyone have any experience with solar panel kits?

I'm talking about the kits being hyped on the internet that say you can build a panel yourself for less than $200 in materials and a days work. Suppose to supplement 1/3 typical energy use per panel.

True or scam?

There are workable strategies for getting off the grid that don't completely sock it to your wallet.  Contact me off-line for more information.

Thanks Julia,

These "kits" are all over the internet from $29.95 to $149.95. I guess another scam... like the "credit repair kits".

There must be 5 or 6 different versions of them. I want to get off the grid but I want to DIY at a low price and it looks that's still not possible.

About the only thing I seem to be able to do is insulate, caulk, replace windows (biggest waste seems to me to be leakage around windows and doors), wrap my water heater and pipes, etc.

I do have an evaporative cooler for the house I'm moving in to which if you live in a dry climate works almost as good (I think it is better - the air feels softer) as A/C for half the cost of operation.

Scam.  "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Powering a home requires a significant amount of energy and even the best solar panels on the market today provide no where near the energy needed to power 1/3rd of a typical home's needs.

The good news is that there are significant federal, and possibly state and utility, incentives for adding solar power to your new or existing home.

My company provides solar hot water installations, so I am not sure about PV (electric) panels.  Usually, you get what you paid for. There are some low quality products on the solar panels market. Just as everything else, you can buy a dishwasher for $250 or for $850.
If you conduct a good, in depth research on the web and find the product to be legit, then I guess it is OK.
We only use the highest quality German solar hot water panels, guarantied for 25 years.
