Are real estate "trades" good options and do brokers/agents typical have inter-state access to help?

If an owner has to move due to job related reasons and would rather not take a loss by selling into a down market, is trading his home for a home in another state a good option if the trade is equitable?  If so, who typically can facilitate that type of transaction and what are some good resources?  There have been some news articles detailing some success stories, but also some pitfalls.  There are also plenty of companies claiming to offer expertise in these transaction but that probably overshadow those who really do specialize in it.  Thank you in advance for any information.

It is easy you can get a Realtor to refer you to another Realtor in the City of your choice. Then search for comparably priced homes with "trade" in the search criteria. Also be sure to mention "trade" in a few fields when listing down here. Be sure to mention the City you wish to trade to in the public remarks to avoid unproductive calls. It could happen fast. You better start packing. Trading has its advantages!!!!

Trading is a very tough proposition because:

1.  One must identify a home you like in the other location with the seller wanting to move to your location and who likes your house.

2.  Usually trades are done on fair market value, so if your area is down 50% and theirs is down 5%, you might not be saving yourself from "taking the loss".    Often money exchanges hands because one house has a higher value than the other.

A real estate lawyer is a good idea, but agents are not required.

There are some organizations who help make matches (with a fee) but because of item #1, there really aren't that many happening.

So, if you are relocating for job related reasons, the probabilities involved may be so complicated and time consuming that they hamper your move.
