Are there any good home buying classes in the Chicago land area (will be my first home)?

I will be purchasing my first home hopefully this year. I have been approved for a conventional loan by putting 5% down but I would like to know if there are better mortgage options for me?

You should interview three agents! Spend a half hour with each of them, ask them "what should i be asking you?" ask as many questions as you need to to be sure you understand the entire process! Meet at their office, see if tou get a good feeling from them! Then make you decision! Jim

I'm curious myself and if others can enlighten:

Is there really a demand out there for buyers wanting to attend classes to learn how to buy their first house?

It seems most people would just go to their local/favorite real estate broker and get the process rolling, learning more as time goes ...

The most important thing to have, particularly when buying your first home, is a terrific agent and a terrific mortgage broker (which, a really good agent should be able to recommend to you).  An experienced agent should be able to teach you anything you would learn in a class, and the knowledge will be customized for you.  The learning is accumulated through the process, plus, every situation and transaction is different.  It's an agent's job to know everything about buying a home, so in lieu of paying money for a class that you could be putting into your new home, I would find a great agent who will share all their learning and experiences with you!

If you want to spend 2-3 hours of time learning what you need that should take 1/2 hour wait for a 'class' to be offered.  You will also be the recipient of new spam mail too as many of the promoters of the clases sell your contact info to dozens of lenders, movers, attorneys etc.  You best bet is to talk to an experienced Realtor AND and experienced lender.  Also, ask the Realtor for an attorney recommendation and maybe spend a few minutes on the phone with him or her. Ask a couple friends if they would recommend a Realtor too.  -Good Luck

You can find some home buying seminars from time to time. They are usually put on by a Realtor and/or a loan officer. I liken attending one of these classes to most schooling/classes. It gives you some fundamental information but anything that really matters you learn during the process of actually buying a home. As they say experience has no substitute.

The single most important decision you'll make in buying a home is choosing your real estate agent. There are so many potential pitfalls in todays market that it has never been more important to work with a qualified individual. Good luck!

There are a lot of these out there. I know of some people who hold them in the Garfield Ridge area.(One of my offices is right there) They also post these online which you can usually find through a simple google search.
