What an amazing move - congratulations!   You will have an amazing experience.

You have lots of good choices.   Please think about NJ and Westchester.   There are many various towns.  Here are some highly regarded agents from different agencies to check with.

In NJ, here is Tom to talk to ((201) 478-6705)…. He covers dozens of towns and has a zillion loyal clients.   10 minutes on the phone and you will have a very clear picture.   http://www.halstead.com/real-estate-agent/thomas-laurita
In Westchester, here is Janet to talk to (914-844-7648)… she knows the towns in striking distance of NYC.   NJ may have the edge because you can take a NJ Transit train to Hoboken and the Path train to very close to your destination.   Westchester would be Train to Grand Central and then the subway.  Both will offer options with half hour commutes.
I'd also say consider the Connecticut Coast.   Beach towns served by dozens of trains to Grand Central.   It's longer than 1/2 hour door to door, but it is a great lifestyle.   I can tell you more about CT.
