I have seen many blogs on T---. Most are a waste of time to read or look at.
I posted a few blogs there. They very quickly got lost among the spamblogs.
My blogs were all written to help people make informed buying decisions. Once I blogged about what I saw as needed I stopped blogging.
What I posted was done well. Once I completed my basic blog library I had no desire to blog more just to put out blogs. If more professionals would just blog relevant things and avoid the spamming blogs blogging would be much better.

Great blogs are ones written by those who view it as a passion. Crappy blogs are written by people who view it as a chore.

Many people blog just for points without any content!

I believe offering high quality content on a regular basis to sites like zillow, trulia and active rain, linkedin, facebook and twitter and using a few optimizing techniques is the best keyword and search engine optimization you can get. I have targeted a keyword, posted on a few social networking sites and literally in minutes was ranked first page on Google....
If you have quality content flowing from your fingers, posting on social networks could be a gold mine.
Dan - the key first and foremost is high quality content....

I used to think it is a chore, but the more I blog, I find it not only help the consumers and potential buyers or sellers, I am also learning a lot about this business by the interactive feedback and comments.

"Posting high quality content on sites like zillow, activerain, trulia and linkedin can get someone ranked first page very fast..."
Not that this is the question, but I can't just let it go.... the best place, by far, to post quality content is on a site/domain that YOU CONTROL. Post all your content on ActiveRain, Trulia, Zillow, etc then wait and see what happens when the rules and/or ownership changes (and if you think that won't happen, think again, It already did happen on AR and has the potential to happen anywhere).
You know who makes the rules and owns my blog? I do. And the only one that can change those rules is my wife...
To the original question, "Is blogging and posting a chore or a passion?" -- for me, it's a passion. I almost *have* to write. It's just how I am wired. If one is wired so that blogging is a chore, then it simply won't be done, or won't be done well. And readers are smart. They will know it's a chore for you (or your passion) and act accordingly.

Jay - I feel ya and know exactly what you are talking about. I have been blogging so long rule changes don't make much different for me because I have become so viral. And I think I have been grandfathered into no changes effecting me. But I hear ya...
Personal websites really makes posting on social networks come full cycle as you can direct links from the social networking sites to your personal site, bounce the consumer to the landing or squeeze page of your choice, capture email and contact info and begin a drip campaign...
But for the person just starting out, posting daily to industry related social networking sites and learning just a few simple techniques can really work. I cannot tell you how many times I tell fellow loan officers whining they have no leads how they can get them for free.

Lewis - Rule changes won't affect you? So lets say ActiveRain gets sold to MarketLeader, and ML comes in and changes the rules. They are going to exempt you?
I thought I was grandfathered into ActiveRain too. Was promised a "Rainmaker account for life". And they changed the rules and that went away.
No offense intended, but no matter how "viral" you are, if you blog and build content on a site/network that is controlled by someone else, the rules can change.
I'm not saying those places aren't effective, just that people need to be aware and understand what can happen.
Just curious, how long have you been blogging?

I have to agree with the other posts. Some people blog just to get the points and you can tell by the worthless content that they post. There are a few blogs that I read rather frequently due to the relevant content that is posted.
