Cabinet stain that won't go out of style.

My kitchen has solid wood custom made cabinets in great shape - however they look dated due to having the light oak stain from the late 1980's early 1990's,  I would like a darker stain, but want to use one that will not go out of style soon since may sell sometime over the next few years when the market is better. Any suggestions?
Also it has the mauve counter top so fashionable then - would butcher block or a granite or stone type counter top be more likely to look dated soon?  This is on a farm so white is totally out of the question.

There is no such thing as "timeless."
