You can certainly purchase a home, but financing can be tricky if you have little or no U.S. credit history. You do not need to sell when you leave.
You'll have the best chance of getting favorable financing if you approach a bank that has a presence both in your home country and here. For example, HSBC has branches in about 60 countries and also has a substantial presence in the Washington DC area. If you apply with one of their local offices, they can work with their branches in your home country to get a sufficient credit history to do the loan.

Yes, you can purchase a home here in the U.S.
Financing may be tricky, depending how long you have been in the U.S. and if you have established U.S. bank accounts, tax records, etc. A cash purchase will be easier.
No you will not be required to sell it when you leave, but when you sell it you may be required to follow the FIRPTA rules.
