If you did not have a testing contingency stipulated in your offer, chances are that you will not be able to test for radon until after you close on the home, however, consult your agent and/or attorney as we cannot give advice on contracts.
The county does typically have free testing kits, the radon tests can be done short term (which is most commonly done in real estate transactions) or they have long term tests. I would caution you with any companies in your area that provide "free" radon tests, we have one in our area that offers free testing and ironically the results always come back elevated. There is a Wisconsin Proficiency list of Radon Mitigators that do testing and installations in your area. Here is the link. http://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/radiation/radon/Lists/MeasProf.htm
I would suggest using someone who is NEHA and NRPP certified. Website is: NEHA-NRPP.org
The cost of a system is more involved than Duane mentioned. It depends on whether you would like an exterior system or interior system, whether the sump pump needs to be replaced (sump pump needs to be submersible), the length of pipe needed to vent the system, the size of the home, how many suction points are needed, etc. There are many variables. On average in our area, the systems start around $650 and up.
My husband is a certified radon mitigator in Brown and surrounding counties.
Wishing you all the best with your home purchase.
Respectfully, Malinda Trimberger

You need to have any testing disclosed in the original offer to purchase or the seller can refuse. On a positive side note once you own the property often times you can ket free testing kits from the city and or county. Also, often times some of the local Radon Remediation companies will also do a test for free or at a reduced rate.
Worst case scenario if it does come back high remediation is always an option. In our area this is usually $750-$900 The cost factor will be determined by if there is already a submersible sump pump and the size of the exhaust blower they need. Again consult a professional for specifics.
Best of Luck!

If you didn't ask for it in your offer, you will have to wait until after closing to perform one. Double check with your agent it make sure there was no testing contingency allowed in your offer and/or consult a real estate attorney. Good luck!

In KY, the seller cannot refuse allowing you to do a radon test. Check asap with your realtor.

Can a seller tell me I can't do a Radon test in the State of Wisconsin?
