I agree that Framingham and Natick would be an easier commute but it really depends on how long of a commute you're comfortable with and the time of day. If you don't have to work the typical 9-5 day, and could adjust when you come and go so it's not at the peak of rush hour, it wouldn't be as busy. The Pike is a pretty easy, direct commute when traffic isn't bad.

I can't completely answer your question but I will say that my daughter attends school in Boston and the transportation is the best in the nation--in my opinion.

Hi Melvin,

I don't know if you have solved your dilemma about commuting from Northborough to Boston via the Mass Pike but I just wanted to add that the commuter rail www.mbta.com offers a relaxed and reliable commute.

From Northborough, you could pick up the train in neighboring Southborough or Grafton.  The schedules are flexible and save on wear and tear on your car...as well as your sanity!

Glad to answer any more questions you may have as I currently live in Northborough myself!

Melvin,

I have commuted from Worcester to Boston many times in the past, and like many say below, it does vary, but it can be pretty smooth most days. I can get from Worcester to Logan Airport in about 45 Min (290 to 495 to Mass Pike), so a commute from Northborough would cut 10-15 minutes off of that depending on your location in Northborough and proximity to I-495.

Generally speaking, the more east you go, the higher the homes will cost, so keep that in mind when you decide on location. If you need any advice in buying in Northborough, just let me know.

Its tough, but it also depends on your hours. Bad weather, sunrise and sunset can also cause slowdowns. From Northboro, you have T commuter rail stations nearby too.

Melvin, Northborough is tougher commute to Boston. I would try Framingham or Natick where we have direct Pike access and 2 options for a commuter rail. If you were going to Worcester then Northborough would be a good choice, but to Boston it's a bit of hike and no one wants to spend that much time in the car!

I would strongly discourage that commute. I have driven from Framingham to just south of Boston to Milton and that is tough. It's so unpredictable.

You should try to get in closer to Boston. Honestly. You will not like that driving.

Well I can't comment on that exact commute, but I did commute from Worcester to Needham along the pike for 9 years.

Unfortunately there are good days and bad days. Some days it would take me 45 minutes to get to work and every once in a while it would take me 2.5 hours to get to work. It can vary a lot.

Watching traffic reports in the morning before you leave can help some. But things can be clear when you leave and then get quite messed up once you are on the road.

The best thing to do is travel when traffic should be at its lightest; ie either leave earlier or later than everyone else does.

I also knew how to get to work from any exit off of the pike. If traffic was real bad I would get off of the pike as soon as I could and take rt 9 or rt 30 or whatever road was available. It just feels better to be moving rather than sitting still.

One last thing for some reason Friday was always the easiest day to get to work and the worst day to get home from work.
