Can retirement be satisfying w/o a local Starbucks, a shopping mall nearby & public transportation?

Buyers are often uncertain about giving up these things (and more) to live their retirement years in Maine communities.  How can someone know it is the right decision to move to Maine after age 55 when their friends think they are nuts to consider it?

Any person moving for retirement should ask themselves what is important in their lives.   Golf 12 months of the year?   Fishing?   Access to medical services (a common one when retired)?   Starbucks?   Comfortable living conditions with warmth for aching joints and easy driving 365 days per year?

I have lived forever without starbucks and public transportation. Ok, I did use public transportation when I was very young. Once I was done with school they no longer picked me up.

Having a source of goods available is needed. Having a mall is not. I need to know I can get food, car parts, gas, and other necessities.

Belfast is to big of a city for me to live in. However, it is nuts to move to Maine for retirement. You just got a few inches of the reason why. High taxes, high electric costs, high fuel costs, and high costs compared to most states are the biggest financial reasons not to choose Maine.

I am looking to go much further south just to get better weather. When I am old and arthritic the last thing I want is cold weather. Yet many who left Maine for jobs when young come back to retire.

p.s. rockinblu Maine is that bump at the top right of the US map. It is about 8 hours above Boston.

We don't need no stinkin' Starbucks when we have Jo's across the street. As a matter of fact, Starbucks, which was a couple blocks down the street, split. Where the heck is Maine anyway? Is that even a state? I thought that was a lobster.
