I am very interesting in getting my license and becoming a Realtor.  However, I don't know if I can afford to not get a paycheck for the first 1, 2, 3...6 months.....
Would starting Part time with a plan to build a skill set and client base be a  wise move?

I do realize many people would prefer a full time, seasoned agent/Realtor....

Of course you can work part time. I think the real question is: can you achieve a level of success as a part time Realtor? I believe the answer is: maybe!
Would you want to hire a part time attorney, CPA, or Doctor?
Working by yourself it will be very difficult to effectively represent your clients and give them good sound advice regarding something you only do 'part time'. It would be different if you are a seasoned real estate investor or owner who has bought and sold numerous properties for your own account.
Joining a team, or working with a mentor at a larger firm, would be a great benefit to you and your clients.
Hope you do well.

Hi,

Yes, you can work part time in real estate, depending on how much time you can put towards both careers. At some point it might benefit you to transfer into full time though.

I wish you all the best,

Kind regards,

Arpad

Congrats! Maybe you'll even consider becoming a full-fledged Realtor®!
Of course you can. You don't have to quit your day job to sell real estate on the side. Just talk to your sponsoring broker to see exactly what it is they have in store for you.
Again, congratulations! Best of luck to you.

Congratulations on Passing your Exam and Welcome to a Fabulous Industry!   I run a team with three agents and one of them does work for me part time.   She is doing well buying and selling homes but I believe her success is due to the support my team and staff provide her.   This is a very detailed business and you need support to get everything done in a timely matter.   I'd suggest seeing if you could join a team in your area.

One of the best parts of real estate is you can work when you want and working part time is an option.  However, it is more difficult to be real successful working part time.  In today's business, many clients want access to you all the time and want you to work throughout the day so it is recommended to work in real estate full time.  This industry changes almost daily and you need that time to stay on top of the industry.

I suggest treating it like a regular job if you want to be successful.  Many part time agents end up not renewing their licenses.

Many buyers and sellers seek the experience of a full time agent.  As with anything the more efficient you are the more productive you can be with your time.

Congrats! I've just received my license in November and I'm currently doing it part time until I finish school next year. In real estate you are working for yourself so whatever hours you put in, will determine the kind of results you want back. Good luck!

Full time Agents would say no but the answer is yes. What is part time anyway? How much time do you need to spend to understand a market and promote yourself? Reality is, most full time agents don't work a steady 9-5 pm work day. So why do they say no? Because, you would become their competition and they wwould perceptially view themselves as sacrificing more than you are in the the profession.

First of all, congratulations on your exam.  From my experience of 12 years so far.  It's is definitely not a part time job.

For both buyers and sellers, if they want to hire a professional would they hire a part timer or full timer?

If you are working for your personal use, partime should be ok.

I hope this answers your question.

Profile picture for Dunes ..
Sure ya can but imo the important question is can you make money?

How many sales and how many agents?
Take a look around here, other RE sites ect at what is said by a significant number of Realtors/Agents about part-time agents
Check out the competition going on for clients/business..
It's fierce & often not a positive thing

But there are those who do it, do it well and make money.
You may be one of those with the talents/ability to do so but imo it's definitely worth serious thought before attempting

You can work part time if you are available all the time!  Clients are available at all different hours and you have to be ready.

I would say that Yes, you can work in real estate part-time IF you goals are for disposable income. I started in the business part time for about a year, but found it very trying on family life. I left the business for a couple of years and came back to it when I could devote full time to it. After 13 years now, I'm glad I took the leap of faith to get into it full time. I suggest getting in touch with your local Keller Williams office for their training calendar and take advantage of whatever free training they offer (even if you work for another company). It will help you a lot.

Real estate is a rather tough business to break into as it takes a lot of time, dedication and resources to become a successful real estate agent.

A lot of realtors that have a licenses are not practicing today because they very easily go broke or just don't have the resources to continue working in this field.

You could work part-time to see if that module would work for you. I know quite a few realtors who are successful that once worked part-time when they started in the industry. It's just going to take you a longer period of time to establish yourself than someone was working on the job full time.

Becoming a realtor would require you to commit time and money for a few years. It would require you to reach out to connections and form new ones.

The NAR says that 30% of realtors work between 20 and 39 ours a week and 11% work less than 20 hours a week. 45% work 40 to 59 hours a week and 15% work 60 hours or more.

I wish you all the best.

Yes, you can do real estate part time but you should concentrate on family and friends as real estate requires a lot of time getting to know the inventory, working buyer's schedules instead of your own and consistent follow-up.

Good Luck!

Its best that you implement your calendaring system in order to determine how much time per week you want to invest in your real estate business.. Plug in each day your hours for your personal time (time with family, dr apt,s school, if any etc.)  and work hours etc., then see where you have the time to do real estate business. This will help you a lot. Good luck!
