Cost Of Installing Central Air

Profile picture for sharon12
I am gutting my house which was builit in 1900 and would like to install central air while the walls are open and duct work could be installed. I have 2 prices of $14,000+ this seems high since my walls will be gutted and the work should go smoothly. I live in a cape and they also say I need two systems. Any advice?

Hi,  I am licensed HVAC Contractor in NY.  You can call me or email me any question you have about HVAC.   Systems are usually estimated by tons of A/C.   400sqft,  is about 1 ton of AC.  Each ton is roughly $1500-2000,  unless there are unique circumstances.

Andrew 718-317-1994.   Hope to hear from you.

Since August 2009

I had a two-system HVAC job done to my Baltimore house in 2004 and it cost me $14,000. I got a few bids and they were all within $500 - $1000. maybe there's collusion among HVAC people. :)

By the way, the AC was well worth it!

Not being a HVAC contractor (I normally sub out that work) I have seen pricing on systems vary greatly. My advice is to continue calling around and getting estimates until you find one that is to your liking. With that being said the lowest is not always the way to go as we all know. HVAC systems are quite involved even if the walls are open already and if they are quoting prices of $14K for 2 systems it is reasonable for my part of the country.
