Cost of Staining Wood Shingles

I am considering buying a wood shingle house built in 1978. The square footage of the house is around 2,000. The house is two story with a basement, so it's like 2 and half stories. How much would it cost to stain the wood shingles to protect them? Would this need to be done every four years?

Ron is right...clean, stain if you choose, then seal.

Simply staining the shingles protects nothing.

This is a muti part process.  The first step is to clean the wood shingles as there would be years of dirt and grime on the surface.  You would need to contact a good pressure washing company which could run you up to $1k or more depending on the area and the type of equipment he will need to reach the top level. This needs to be done very carefully by a professional outfit not just anyone with a pressure washer and a ladder.  Next, let them totally dry out for a few days, free.  Getting a painter to seal them would probably run a couple thousand because of the size of the house.  You'll want to consider having them do your trim at that time as well if it needs updating.  All said and done 3-5k. every 5 years or so.
