I've stopped using Craigslist for listing properties.
The downside outways the upside for me.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware of this at all. I'll keep my eyes open from now on.

It's happened to me also. It seems to be more prevalent with rentals. They pirate the add and ask for application fees, deposits, ect. to be sent directly to them. The only solution is to be vigilant and pay attention. The Google alert seems like a good idea, which I plan to put into practice asap.

If you e-mail abuse@craigslist.org, they will remove the offending ad within 24 hours. And, yes, this is happening to my ads regularly (Seattle market). I notice through my vacation rental ads that Craigslist works much less well than it used to - too many scams.

Hi Beth! I have a Google Alert set for every one of my listings. That way I see if anyone is talking about it, advertising it, etc. I find out about it as soon as it happens. I don't think we can prevent it but we sure can do something about it!

Yes, it happens both with sales and rentals. Flag them, be alert. It happens no matter where you advertise (and yes, they steal the pictures while they are scamming you).
