Discrimination - Removing a Property from Zillow

Profile picture for hmkim
Contributions: 4
Despite what Zillow.com says regarding removing a property from the Zillow data base, some properties are not listed at Zillow.com.

On the cul-de-sac where my house is located, no information about two houses is provided. So, tell me why the current Zillow's practice is not discriminating. If you allow some people to remove their houses from Zillow, it is a discrimination.

discrimination isnt illegal, from a strictly technical sense. as long as zillow doesn't discriminate against certain classes of people, they are not required to provide equal treatment. for instance if someone at zillow knew there was a way to hide or manipulate their home's specific information, and did it for a friend, or showed the friend how to do it, that would be embarrassing, but not unlawful.

And then there are the ones that were on Zillow that didn't get removed, but "appear" to be missing...

Zillow has some bugs that some people know how to manipulate; Zillow calls that "gaming the system", and they don't approve of it; but they haven't plugged all the loopholes yet.

(And they did send me an E-mail to tell me not to post how to do such things).

No, that's not what I said.
Data providers don't remove specific homes either. If a home isn't on Zillow, it's almost certainly because a specific home's info isn't in the public record for some reason. Examples could include that the home is new construction and isn't on file with the county yet, or perhaps the property has been subdivided and isn't on file properly with the county yet. Alternatively an actual error has occurred wherein someone at the county or data provider's office made a mistake and didn't enter in a home correctly. The bottom line is that any home missing from Zillow is unintentional and hasn't been removed on purpose.

OK. I see. If someone has successfully asked the data partners not to feed, his house is invisible on Zillow. In that case, technically, Zillow has never removed it and is not responsible.

Hi everyone,
Spencer from Zillow here.
No we don't allow people to have their home removed from Zillow (video here).
If there are other homes in your area that aren't on Zillow that's because for some reason their data wasn't in the public domain or because one of our data partners for some reason didn't feed the data to us. It's not because Zillow removed the home from our website. (We don't do that.)

I agree with your position about discrimination. This question has been asked before and Zillow has been very clear that they don't EVER remove them by request (unless the owner added the house themselves). I am big supporter of equal treatment so I think they the rules should be the same for everyone. I would be disappointed if I found out that Zillow let some people remove Zestimates and others not.

Many agents have pressed for control over removing the Zestimate, but I have always felt that it would put owners trying to sell at a big disadvantage. The rules should be applied equally. I offer you a thumbs up raising the issue and I hope they can answer your question.

hmkim,

I understand that you want an answer from someone at Zillow, and not just random people from the board community.  But many of the people on these boards, including Sunny, are genuinely concerned with making the Zillow community better.  For us, it would definitely be helpful if you could give a little bit more detail about the situation, so we can understand the problem, and know what to look for in the future if this really is happening.  What "circumstances" are you referring to that would allow some people to remove their homes?  Explaining the details could definitely help determine if this is really a case of discrimination that goes against the Zillow ToS, or if there might be some other, justifiable reason that homes would be removed (for example, a judge's ruling, identity protection for some other legal reason, etc.)  I have no idea what these reasons might be, but some additional info from you would help make things clearer.

Sunnyview,

You didn't annoy me at all.

I just want an honest answer from Zillow. Zillow knows what I'm talking about. I'll probably directly contact the CEO. I don't mind being listed at Zillow. However, if they allow *certain people* not to be listed (not because of the lack of public records but because of something else), it is discrimination.

Zillow *knows* what houses I'm talking about.  I want an answer from Zillow, not from others who don't know about the specific circumstances.

I don't believe Zillow allows removals that are based on public information - but that doesn't mean they have information on everybody.  My house isn't on Zillow, but it isn't because I removed it.

I agree with you that would be discrimination. Zillow says that they do not allow people to remove their homes from Zillow unless they added them to the database themselves. Some houses are missing because they don't have enough info to create a Zestimate for them. Others sometimes go missing due to software glitches. However, if you know of specific houses that have been removed, please post the address so Zillow can look into it. I think fairness is important.
