Yes, it is widely recommended that a buyer should be represented by an attorney when purchasing real estate. If you have any questions at all it is advisable to consult an attorney to avoid future legal hassles. To find a real estate attorney, contact your local bar association, which may offer local referral services. Your lawyer can assist you with an abstract of title, make certain that there aren't any covenants, liens, easements, etc. registered against the property that could potentially impede the use of it, and carefully scrutinize the adjustments prior to the transaction closing. This includes taxes owed & utility costs paid. Your attorney will also assist you in understanding the purchase contract and how you will take title on the piece of property

New York is unique. As Mitchell indicated lawyers are an intricate part of the process. You still need a Realtor to assist you in finding a property.

Thanks Mitchell... I wasn't sure. I do have a lawyer, but then I heard that some states do not require having one. I wasn't sure about NY state.

Dear JoniMacaroni:
Yes, you must have a lawyer in Brooklyn, no if, ands or butts about it! No deal in Brooklyn is that straigtforward that you don't need a lawyer. When selecting a lawyer you should try to find one that is located in Brooklyn, specializes in real estate and also that has some experience. Make sure you ask them how much they will charge you for their services cost and remember that cheapest is not always the best. If you need further assistance please let me know. Good luck!!
Sincerely,
