No.  You can do it yourself.  The reason to use a third party is to make sure you meet the known criteria, to do the endless follow up and get expert advice.  But you can do it yourself.....

If you find out you are denied, keep trying and find out why from your bank

No, you can do it your self. The paperwork can be very difficult and all things must be in your package.

NO. Here is all you need:

HAMP (Home Affordable Modification Program) full packet from The Office of the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program
Why pay a service $,$$$ when you can do it for NOTHING. For the packet copy and paste direct link to your browser:

Email me for non working link so I can re-post it right away.

Hi,
You can do it yourself, but if you feel uncomfortable or uncertain that you might do or say something to your lender that could deny you, than I would consider using a professional.

Like changing the oil on your car, you can do it yourself or choose a professional.  The considerations are

-Do you have the time and/or desire?
-Are you familiar with the basic guidelines to position yourself to best qualify when applying directly with your lender?

If you are uncertain, then a loan modification company (or at least a consultation) would not be a bad idea.

The best way to find a good one is to simply check them out on the Better Business Bureau website.  Many companies have only been in business a short time and already have an F rating.

I am affiliated with a national company that is established and has an A rating.  Just Click On My Profile for more information.

It never costs anything just to get information and learn of all your options before making a decision.

You can definitely file yourself.  It is difficult to get a loan mod done yourself as usually the homeowner does not understand the guidelines and how to go about making sure they get their loan mod done successfully.  And you bank will definitely not be helpful in completing paperwork so that i best benefits you, as their goal is to benefit them.

If for some reason you decide to do it yourself and get denied don't give up as you may want to try a professional like an Attorney that does them here is an article for you that may help and also the website is full of great info for to help you thru this tough journey.
