I actually maintain several different blogs. I have a general blog with some listings and I also keep a blog on a social networking site I use, realestate.konnects.com , in order to minimize the number of blogs and professional networking I do.
One issue I see with all of these methods of outreach is getting spread too thin. Good content is what makes a blog or website worth somebody's time. If I can have one website that does everything I need... sign me up.
Somebody else comment about only young, non-home buyers being on myspace and other social networks. I think this is completely false. I personally know tons of late 20s and people in their 30s using social networking websites. They either are buying houses or will be very shortly. That is where you will be building a solid foudation of clients.
I have been able to get on the first page of google and on page 2 and 3 for different results within the first month of writing. You have to post consistently for that to happen, 3-4 times a week. Once a month is more like a newsletter IMO. I still haven't figured out how personal to get on the site and am just going with the flow.
One of the things that has helped me the most to find ideas is to create a google alert, quite easy, for "(your area) real estate" and you will have articles popping up in your email.
I have my real estate blog on active rain because of it's fantastic SEO value.

Maintaining a blog is just as important for a real estate professional (IMO) as having a website.

I'm not sure those are blogs, they look more like profiles than blogs....
Blogs help to put a face on a real estate agent. Otherwise agents are a voice on the telephone or a referral from a friend or family member and you may still have doubts.
Blogs help to create a presence on the internet. So does social networking. We used to do it mano a mano however the internet has picked up the pace. Web site assist too, however too many agents use the same company and have the same look and the same ... .
Blogs are only as good as the bloger. Some are nothing more than profiles as azrob mentioned. Others have valuable information.
Many do not have blogs because they fear others will critique them, others may laugh, argue, chastise or just be ugly. Some agents do not have the writing skills. Some are unsure of themselves and then there are the lazy ones. Grab bag -- pick your answer.
I've been blogging for some time and am part of a couple of blog sites: www.TeamReba.com/blog and I am a co-contributor on Rain City Guide. Besides these formats for getting myself out there and having my own Team Reba website, I've been doing social networking since my days in software. I'd say I'm on at least 6 or more sites including MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Active Rain, Biznik, and Zoodango.
I have several and am a contibutor to Bloodhound Blog, as well. I think the reason many agents do not have them is that they do take a commitment of time & energy. We recently held a lunch and learn at our local association of REALTORS and I was asked "how much time do youspend a week blogging?". The mouths dropped open when I said 10 to12 hours a week - usually between 11pm and 3am. :)
