It also depends on whether the garage is attached to the home or detached. If it is detached, and cannot be accessed directly from the home then it is considered "additional square footage" and not included in the actual HLA (heated living area).

Did you finish the bonus room after purchasing the home? If so, the tax office does not know about the additional square footage and you are not being taxed on the additional square footage. If you are trying to sell your home, you would count the additional square footage of the bonus room as long as it has heating and air connected to it.
Do you count the space in the room over garage in total square feet?
