We were told we had to be. Also, how is the credit used with two separate scores. What if one person has better credit than the other? If one person is making less than $10,000 a year, does it really help to add their income?

You can buy a home with any one you want, a wife, a girl friend, a business partner, anyone at all.

The bank will take the middle score, of the lower person on the deal.

If one person only makes 10k, be sure to get advice from your mortgage broker, if they should be added, as if they also have the lower credit score it may only hurt you.

No, you don't have to be legally married to co-own a house.

The credit scores of the lowest of the two individuals is used.  Each person has three credit scores, and they use the middle ones.   So, if person 1 has 700, 720 and 740 and person 2 has 600, 620, and 635 - the score used would be the 635

My fiancée and I at the time had NO problem doing it.

She had better credit than I, so she was number 1 on the note and I was number 2. We have built for 6 months, lived in it a year then we finally got married. There is NOT any issue with this type of purchase.

We used CHASE
