Does Zillow believe that consumers should be warned about highly dishonest RE agents?

Profile picture for honestyinnhre
I have now tried twice unsuccessfully to post a true, fair and honest review of a highly dishonest real estate agent, Stella Demetri.  You won't publish it, thus leaving unsuspecting real estate consumers in a very bad situation.  You claim that my review contains accusations of Stella Demetri's illegal activities but in fact it does not, it contains facts based upon public records.  My question is:  Is Zillow a reputable firm?  What is the missioin of your firm?  Are you not for profit?  Does Stella Demetri pay you any money?

Thanks, Dan Zorn -[removed by Zillow moderator]

Well, Dan, let's face it - Zillow doesn't really provide the functionality to separate honest complaints about an agent from the sort of stuff we see in political campaigns.

But you're going about this all wrong. It's not the public that you should be telling about Stella, it's your State Licensing Commission and, if she's a Realtor®, the state and local boards.

All the best,

As Jim said you should call the agents broker. Most brokers won't tolerate unethical behavior in their brokerages. But be prepared to explain your position fully.

We don't have enough information to take sides but posting negative reviews that contain defamatory information that leads to the Realtor suffering damage to income and reputation may be considered libel.

Is it possible that your review went beyond your direct experience with the agent and talked about other aspects of the agent (arrest records, allegations and the like)?

I agree that rewriting the review is the best way to go. The whole point of the rating system is for consumers to preview a particular agent before making the decision on representation. A review, even if negative, is valuable to the process. Address the concerns of the moderators and keep your review concise. Your feedback is important.

Dan, it sounds like you had a bad experience and that really is too bad. If you are really concerned with a real estate agent's performance then your first call or email should be to their principle broker and if they are not able to give you satisfaction or if you believe some illegal was done then you should contact the real estate commission. Posting a negative review on Zillow may help to work through some of your anger and give you a sense of satisfaction, but it is not going to accomplish your goal of keeping someone from experiencing your level of dissastisfaction.

If you really want to protect other consumers and if you feel you deserve some sort of restitution, then posting here is not going to do it. If you contact the Real Estate Commission, then an investigation may result in loss of license and/or fines.

Good Luck!

Hello, I am sorry that you had such a bad experience with this agent and I am glad that consumers like you take the time to review the agents they have worked with for better or for worse. Zillow is a media/information company so I do not think that they have a financial  basis for rejecting the review.

It is more likely that they do not want to cause themselves or you legal problems for libel so they may have bounced the review. That agent has only one review on Zillow right now-a 5 star. I know that you may find this suggestion distasteful, but I would say that you should revise your review and try to get it posted in whatever form that Zillow will accept.

That may mean stripping out some comments of illegal dealings unless you can provide Zillow PROOF for a conviction that is in the public record. Do not accept the denial, but post as much factual information that you can about what you experienced. Stick to the facts so that others can benefit from your honest review.

Actually Zillow could allow you to (allegedly) slander someone as they are immune from potential lawsuits.

You however could be sued for comments posted on the internet.

They can't let you slander the lady. Rewrite it without direct allegations of illegal activities. Make them veiled allegations of illegal activity.
