I pay NAR, CAR and appraiser license dues. As an appraiser who needs MLS data, I need to be pay the senseless NAR dues - have to, no way out, it is not voluntary at all, even though I disagree with 95% of NAR's policies.
The money mostly goes into lobbying efforts of NAR in Washington. Interestingly, as an appraiser, we dont have a NAR on our side to fight for anything, and we are at the mercy of the big banks, FNMA etc. As much as I loathe paying anything to NAR/CAR (California Association of Realtors), I do wish we as appraisers did have some type of NAR on our sides fighting for our rights, and would gladly pay those fees.

Just curious...
Fair disclosure...I am not a big fan of unions, lobbyists, etc. With that said, do unions/lobbies work for members' "rights" or "interests" (though I could argue that in many cases the "real answer" is neither).

I think you can find interesting info on their website. I use their stats and other resorces from time to time. If I could drop their membership, I would thought.

I am amazed about the amount of real estate agents that feel there is no or little value in their local association, state association, and national association. The sad part is that while many are paying the dues giving money to RPAC and making a difference, the others sit on their hands and get the rewards of the working REALTORS.
I am very active in my local and state association. Fellow agents ask why I do so much. I respond that I do so much because I care about my industry. That same industry puts food on my table and keeps the lights on at my house. If I didn't care and not stay involved and others didn't care what would happen. Let's see what would happen 1- Banks would be in our business 2- Home Buyer Program would not have happened 3- we could have lost the Mortgage Interest Deduction this year 4- the Small Business Health Care proposal 5- Federal Banks would be competing UNFAIRLY for your clients and customers, with all the competitive advantages 6- the media would continue to try to roll over our profession and the realities of the marketplace 7- The list goes on and on. Don't you want someone on your side when something happens? That to me is worth the cost of $1a day?

Here is my top reasons I pay a little over $1 a day to be a REALTOR®
1- I have a Attorney that I can call 24/7 FOR FREE. 2- I have access to Zip Forms FOR FREE 3- I have access to discounted Phone Bill FOR FREE ($240 Value) 4- I have access to a full time Lobbyist representing my career FOR FREE 5- In South Carolina Market Data Research (Monthly) FOR FREE 6- Webinar by the state and national FOR FREE 7- Discounted Insurance, Discounted Care Rental, Discounted supplies 8- More and More and More
Just those items is worth more that $1 a day,

There's lots more but it all boils down to this. You are a member of a professional organization whose primary function is to protect your ability to practice your profession in an ethical and profitable manner. You also may belong to networks, franchises and other entities, but it is your REALTOR® membership which is the core of your profession. Tied into that is the protection of private property rights and the promotion of home ownership and sound economic development. Otherwise there will be nothing to sell. That's what your REALTOR® membership is doing for you while you're out there listing and selling. It's the dedicated league of volunteer leaders and staff serving every day as your business advocate…and it's your active participation in that league. That's the value proposition. Look over your shoulder, your association is there watching out for you and YOU are part of it. I'm proud of the ‘R' and what it stands for, not just in the public's eye, but for me. REALTORS® stand for a code of ethics and a collaboration of professionals who work together and learn together. The pledge that a REALTOR® must take before earning the title is powerful. I am proud to be more than just a real estate agent...I am a member of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®--I am a REALTOR®.

Does the Board of Realtors serve any real purpose?
