It does not have to match, but it should "flow".  Also, it depends whether it is for your own personal enjoyment or you are thinking about resale down the road.  Get a few different opinions when choosing styles and stains so you have a good cross section of opinions, especially If you will be thinking resale at some point.

Personally? No.

I hate everything being matchy matchy.

Plus (I think) the only time wood should be painted is when it's cheap ugly wood, in such poor condition that it couldn't be revived or when it's already painted.

Folks who buy old homes spend a fortune stripping, scraping and sanding paint off of old woodwork.
