Finishing an attic for storage

What are the code requirements for finishing an attic for storage? It is over a garage, with a full door on the 2nd floor hallway for access. I do not think it will be used for living space due to the low ceiling, but would like to make it into a large closet, or even maybe an informal working area or playroom. I would also greatly benefit from having it walled and insulated during hotter and colder temp swings.

As others have mentioned, having it up to code is essential.  The city & county can be of assistance.  Finishing up a attic for extra storage could be an great idea.  One thing that is great for resale, additional & usable square footage.

Call the city or county that you live in and get the code for your area. Having it done to code helps when re-selling.

Codes are a local thing and best asked to those that know since they can change quickly, the county building department. Call them to ask.
