First-time home buyer need advice in the western suburbs of Chicago

Price range $450- $550k.  Below are my criteria.
(1) Good school district for both grade and high schools
(2) Close to Metra Station
(3) 4 bedrooms 2 bathrooms, around 1,800 sqf
(4) Attached 2 car garage
(5) Close to Oak Brook, IL

Where should I buy a single family house in the western suburbs of Chicago, close to Oak Brook area?  The area I really like is College View neighborhood at Elmhurst, IL.  Any advice will be appreciated.

Jason,

I recently moved to Elmhurst and could not be happier. I can from a good school district but many of the Elmhurst schools are truly above the standard. It was the schools that brought me here. Finding the right house is the easy part once you have the location. Let me know if I can help you further. Thank you.
Bobby

There's a neighborhood, or area,  in Elmhurst commonly referred to as "Center of Town".  This basically means that you can easily walk to the metra and downtown Elmhurst restaurants and shops.  Most agents will definitely advertise this in their comments on their listings, as it is considered a very strong selling point for homes in that location.  The schools are excellent and you can check them out online.  I sometimes use a website called www.greatschools.com because they post scores and parent reviews.

One little thing: you won't easily find a two car attached garage in that part of town.  The houses tend to be older with detached garages.  The houses with attached garages tend to be new or newer and slightly above your price range.

You could look into the south section of Elmhurst, where there are some nice colonial styles that fit your criteria. But, you would have to park your car at the metra.  The prices are pretty reasonable and there is no waiting list, like there is in some other suburbs.

Honestly, your choices are pretty vast. My second pick for you would be Wheaton.  There are a lot of lovely traditional style homes with two car attached garages and the town is right on the Metra line.  It's a little further but possibly will fit your criteria a little better.

Best of luck in finding the perfect home!
Anne

Sorry, forgot the site link:

Also, not much available in College View right now, and sometimes hard to find a 2 car garage.  Many homes only have a 1 car garage.

You will have to research the schools yourself, as what you feel are good schools may not be what someone else thinks.  You can easily do this by going to the Illinois school reports site.

Towns that run along the train line are Elmhurst, Lombard, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton (in that order running out West from Chicago)  You could also check Westchester, Western Springs and La Grange.  All are near Oak Brook, have or are very close to Metra and would be able to find a house within your price range.

Best of luck to you.
