Frameless shower enclosure worth an additional $400 more than a framed model?

Profile picture for mephiston5

We just bought or first house and we decided to put a glass shower enclosure in the master bath. It will cost us a about $1000 for a framed enclosure or $1400 for the frameless model.

Do you think the frameless enclosure is worth the extra price?

I love the frameless...  They are usually a better quality heavier gauge glass.  they have quality hindges and have a cleaner look.  Not that the framed ones are junk ... they just dont have the same look and feel.  Once you install it ... wipe it down with rainex ( for car windshields)  every so often.  This will lessen the water spots and soap film making it easier to clean.

I have to agrre w/kd#.....  There is a Greek saying, roughly translated is something to the effect of, "If you're going to eat the whole pig, eat the tail too", meaning get the whole job done.  Do it once and do it the way you want it.  Is $400 going to break the bank for you?  If the answer is no, go w/ the frameless.  The frames get nasty over time anyway.

they look pretty cool!!

On our bathroom redo, we went with a framed door but ordered it with a bronze hammered finish to go with the faucets. After doing that the price jumped up. Theres all sort of options on thoses doors.

I am facing the same quandary.
I was given an estimate of $1700 ONLY AFTER I personally designed the bathroom, and every feature except the shower door was installed.

I was shocked!
I hear it is well worth it; however, we spent our wad on the rest of our improvements and upgrades.

In this economy I was hoping we might get it for $1200-$1500.
Does anyone know where one can get good quality frame less shower doors in the New England or Boston area, including installation for less than $1700?
