Gas fireplace

Installing a gas fireplace has many benefits to a basement remodel. Foremost is the aesthetic feel it give to the space. The better units can be ducted easily to separate areas of the living space. I have found that by using a drop ceiling any residual heat is transferred to the floor above. This can reduce your heating bill for the main house.
If gas is not present in your home, you can have a propane or natural gas tank installed to feed the unit.
I would like feedback on whether or not anyone has found a drawback to this type of installation. My customers are satisfied, yet not having one installed in my own home I have wondered if the heat is to intense.

If you are using a small propane tank just for the fireplace or a couple of appliances you will probably find you are paying a very high cost, so propane fireplaces are not always economical or beneficial ways to add heat to a space. We have used them in remodeling or finished basements and they do add greatly to comfort and enjoyment of the space but I would not tell my clients there is a cost benefit using the fireplace to heat the space or the rest of the house.

gas fireplaces aren't real that efficient. If you buy one get one that is, because you will find that is will cost you a couple of $ per hour to run.  If you get one get the one you can vent with a little duct work, rather than open flu-style.

The difference between propane and natural gas is the size of the hole the gas comes out.  get a new valve, they should be under $20.  if you are going from propane to natural gas I think you can drill out the valve to make the hole bigger.  If you make it too big you will get BIG heat.  Call up your local gas company and ask them if the valve needs to be bigger, then ask them what size it needs to be.  You can get that size of drill bit and be done.  We have done this with BQ's before to get more heat.

Gas fireplaces with the fake logs are very efficient.
You can not really expect them to heat your house.
They are great for "great rooms" where everything is open, (kitchen, eating area, family room).
Most come with blowers and remotes to maintain the temperature..
Works really well for certain areas, so you don't have to use the furnace to heat the entire 3000 square foot house !
