We currently live in smithtown ny 11787 and will be relocating to Union NJ in august.  Looking for similar demographics near union.  wouldn't mind commuting up to 45 minutes to union.  Like suburbs, looking for houses (nicely updated) between 300-400K.3+ beds 2+ baths.  Reasonable taxes (I know its NJ, Sub 9k).  Need ideas on good schools nice neighborhoods.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

That is actually my coverage area.  I grew up in Long Island and am familiar with Smithtown.  Springfield would work for you which is next to Union.  I would be happy to speak to you in detail about your needs, etc.

Springfield is a good suggestion - there are other towns in Union County that will fall within your commuting tolerance and offer good schools - prices will certainly vary, but to give you a sampling of what's available in communities that I would suggest - Springfield, Cranford, Scotch Plains, Berkeley Heights, New Providence - here is a snapshot of some available inventory in your price range:
Sampling of Available Homes

Getting your head around communities and deciding which one(s) meet your criteria and feel like "home" is an important part of bringing your search into focus.
