I agree it is an issue, but people need to know though that the line between both slander/libel is the truth of the statement (except in Massachusetts). A unfavorable statement alone is not slander or libel as long as it is factual. Opinions are protected as long as there is a basis in fact.
The best protection against libel/slander is treating people the way you would want to be treated and doing the best professional job you can. Every business has a rough client now and then, but when you respond to them you have to keep in mind you are a professional. Even your response to a negative statement made by a past contact is an opportunity to show your professional mettle to people who read your reply.
