Maybe some track lighting? It can look okay if you have some artwork on the wall to direct some of the lamps to. We DIY installed some in our last house. It wasn't too bad. They have all kinds now too.

You know, I think I would cap it off.

I would hang a chandelier much higher. I am into the chandeliers that you can put lamp shades on to match the other decor.

I would too Oklahoma. It's not like we don't have a light nearby!!!! But sometimes you have to let the hubby have some say too! I actually was wondering about the track lighting myself?

You can cap it off white. Warning: you are going to need an extremely long latter to get to it. Been there done that with the high ceilings. I have a hanging bronze light fixture in my formal living room and my kid knocked off the very top circular fixture that goes around the hole with a beach ball. Dont have the ladder so I McGyvered it using an extension rod to clean spider webs and some strong epoxy glue.

Some of the newer track lights look like a piece of art compared to the 80s ,90s lights. This is a really cool website to look at lighting for your situation, then you can make an ultimate decision based on whats out there.I hope it helps!

I am not a big fan of track lighting but in this installation I think it is by far your best option. Just try to get something that looks modern without being "out there" on style or overly classic because you dont want it to look out dated next year. Get something middle of the road with LED bulbs so you wont have to worry about changing them. Do yourself a favor and install them on a dimmer and I think they will work out great.

formal dining room? heck no, get a pool table and a beer keg machine to keep some local premium brews, like 4 peaks!

Ditto on the dimmer, Spec. We put ours on a dimmer - made a huge difference.
Our pool table was in the finished basement, Rob. I could use one of those keg machines, though - and one of the slurpee-type margarita makers. 8)

Your problem is that, for a room with ceilings that high, without the light you've just got a dark ceiling sitting up there, making the room into a cave like area (maybe that's what you're going for).
What you could replace it with is a light that radiates out horizontally along the ceiling but the lights themselves are behind a shield, or cover, from below. The effect would be radiating cones of light shooting across your ceiling without shining anything directly onto anything in the room.
Or, you could hang a rotating disco ball and hit it with lights from the four corners of the room while the BeeGees are playing.

I love the disco theme! That's what I will do! He-he! SoCal, we will have to rent a scaffol or a very tall ladder because an extention ladder will not work!

I would cap it off or do track lighting. AND, I would rearrange all the furniture so it doesn't look as if you are still planning on buying a table for the spot.

there are some gorgeous ceiling fans with lights out there, at least it would look like you have a reason for a ceiling fixture in that part of the room.

A room with ceilings that high could use a piece of trim about 9 ft up that goes all the way around, not quite a crown but something like that and to paint the bottom color with a slightly darker color, it would bring the scale down and make the area more cozy.

Then we need to address your "dining room". If you are not using the space as a dining room but hub still wants a light then put a lovely pendant. It doesn't label the space too much one way, and just put it higher off the ground than what a typical dining fixture would hang. The ambient lighting would be nice.
The light fixture hanging over the couch........hum......McK......we need to talk..........

The ceiling fan is purty bad too.......need to address that.........

The fixtures don't need to be matchy matchy but have some cohesiveness.

And you may consider re-thinking your drapery and taking out the valance part and just having panels on the sides of the window, a little more updated look. If the rod isn't that attractive then look at getting a cheapy but attractive one at Lowes or Target.

And for a room that large, consider bringing your furniture more into the center, or closer to the entertainment center/tv. Putting furniture up against walls makes the room look blah. Move that chair more in front of that window and bring the couch forward and then you can strategically place a woven toy box behind there to store all the clutter quickly, or a console table with a lamp and then a box under for clutter hiding.

Lady C: We better not post pictures of our humble dawg house. You'd end up with serious hand cramps trying to give us advice! Recommendation one: too many cardboard boxes piled in corners. Recommendation two: dawg blankets on all furniture detracts from .... hmmm, some fancy decorating term!

I just put up paw print fleece fabrics on two of my windows. :) Trying to stay warm!! They are adorable but not elegant.

Ms Mina: Your decorating elegance appeals to our dawgie hearts! We are trying to stay warm also - the humans are wearing polartec pants and the dawgs are wearing fur coats. Oh, forgot, they always wear fur coats!

LOL. Well, dawgs, my fleece curtains are suitable for dog or cat people. Dark red background with black prints. Prints heading up, of course. Got the fabric from Joann's Fabrics last week.
My goal is to use the heat system as little as possible, so I'm layering up my windows with all kinds of things.

Ok, I am considering going to track lighting route. As to the comments from wetdawgs about rearragnign the furniture, the couch is actually a sectional that is big and takes up a great deal of space. We took two of the sections out when we put it on the market to make the room look "more roomy". Once we bring back the other sections things will look more centered. LC - the draperies are pretty dated and I have decided to that is on my list to update. I am going to go with the redish/burgandy color that I have accents in - that you really can't tell by the pictures. The old outdate light by the window is going as well. But I didn't think the ceiling fan is that bad????

Ms Mina: Wow! It is stunning!
Ms McKylie: okey dokey - while I wouldn't have staged it that way, our house gets zero designer awards.

Mc, Have the hub go out and steal the light bubble bar off a police car and install in place of the brass "thing". Walla, a conversation piece.
Option two, put a tall bar hieght 4' round table under the fixture..new fixture, with 4 tall chairs and create a game table...or beer tasting table or whatever.
