Also save a full gallon for future touch ups since Painting companies change color shades and names every few years.

Jim is absolutely right, it depends on many details.
Here's the thing though-if you buy really cheap paint, you'll need a lot more of it and you'll do a lot more work.   Ask anyone who's painted a few times....the better stuff goes a lot further and it might cost more per gallon but you use so much less it is a savings.


Best place to get this answer is at the paint counter.

How many square feet of walls and ceilings do you have? Have they ever been painted or primed? Are you trying to cover a darker color with a lighter color?

In addition to the questions above, coverage will depend on the quality and coverage area of the paint you are using. Read the labels on the different paints and see what their coverage area per gallon is. There are too many variables to give a simple answer here.
