This is a major problem in many areas, I'll be hanging out here looking for the best advice to give to others regarding this topic. Great discussion Kelly and I'm hopeful for some great ideas here. Thanks.
@Roberto - excellent idea.

I prefer motion alarms, and video web cameras that broadcast to your phone, and locked driveway gates to make it harder to lift the things over, and license plate cameras for prosecuting the thieves.
Some have even suggested getting the high voltage fence deterrents and connecting them to the cover of the HVAC units internally. And it doesn't hurt to have a loud audio alarm and lights when the unit is touched. It is all low cost insurance that can easily be moved to another site, or left if a new owner wants the extra security.

What i've seen in phoenix is cages around the ac... and not much of that. Many foreclosure homes still end up stripped.
On my rentals, I am replacing the screws that hold the ac enclosure with ones that require a special bit to open. While not foolproof, it should slow the thieves down enough that they move onto another vacant property. Now of course, I have to go out whenever an ac repairman comes, as they won't have the bit to open the ac.
