No, the tax credit has NOT been extended to the general public. Go to irs.gov for details on the extension that is provided to the military. There is a one year extension for the military but there are guidelines to qualify for the tax credit.

The Senate passed a bill on 6/16 that included an amendment to extend the date to close a Tax Credit eligible loan until 9/30/2010. The House is likely to consider an extension this week. The joint bill must then pass Congress and then be signed by the President. Contract purchase date of 4/30 is still a requirement.

Sorry, I must clarify and retract my statement. The federal tax credit has NOT been extended yet. The US Senate has approved a provision to be included in a larger Act that is expected to pass through the Senate and the House which will extend the closing date for claiming the credit until September. I hope this clears things up, I misunderstood the article the first time around. Happy shopping!

The tax credit has not been extended. The proposal for extension that is in the Senate is regarding the time to close an existing transaction in order to receive the tax credit. Currently, the requirement to receive the Federal tax credit was to have the property under contract by April 30, 2010 and to close on the transaction by June 30th, 2010. The proposed extension, if passed, would allow current transactions in process to file by Sept.30, 2010 and still qualify for the credit (if all other qualifications are met). This allows for some of the short sales and bank owned properties that have been taking longer to process to file.

No, the tax credit has not been extended, but a new California tax credit started in May. If you search for "2010 Tax Credit for New Home / First-Time Buyer" on a search engine, you will find information and find out if you qualify.
