Home Buying First Steps: Check your Credit Score

Lenders use your credit history to get an idea of what loan you qualify for.  Good credit will help get you a lower rate and a larger mortgage.   Go to www.AnnualCreditReport.com to get a free copy of your credit report.  Study your report and make sure everything is accurate.  [self promotion deleted by Zillow moderator]

@ Kim...

Welcome to Zillow. It's a bit different than some other RE sites, and it's rules take some getting used to. You should check Zillow's policy for posting on forums, here.

The short version is, no soliciting and/or self-promotion is allowed in forum posts. Including contact info (e.g. phone, email, links to website, etc.) is considered self-promotional in Zillow's forums.

Enjoy answering consumer questions, which is really what the forums are biased towards. If you try to force the issue, you'll usually find yourself afoul of one of Zillow's policies (check your prior post).

Cheers

Why do you assume I need a loan or have a credit score?

It is easier and more correct to say figure out what you are willing and able to spend on a house before buying. That could simply mean looking at your bank account balance or asking any mortgage professional what you can afford to borrow. But if you are going to borrow money for a house figure out what you can really afford to spend each month before taking a lenders idea at face value. Your spending habits and the lenders ideas may be in conflict. Just because a lender says you can afford to spend $1,000 a month on a house does not mean your budget can afford more than $850 a month.
