I've been going to Home Depot all the time now in hopes of learning a whole lot more about fixing stuff myself for my flips and haven't run into major problems yet. But then again, I'm a complete Home Depot newbie. I heard Loews is pretty good though.
I've bought a bunch of stuff from Home Depot in recent years: we finished off a daylight basement that covered the entire footprint of the house, and bought virtually all the materials there. I don't think we had a single problem with any of our special orders. We also had our countertops (engineered stone) installed through Home Depot, and they did a fine job. I'm sure there are differences in quality from store to store. And I believe that Home Depot subcontracts out all installation services, so they're only as good as the subcontractor you get.
All in all, I've been very happy with Home Depot, although in recent years it's gotten a lot harder to find someone to help you in the store. I guess that's the price we pay for rock-bottom prices.

Lowe's beats Home Depot hands down in Central California.

I'm lucky enough to have both Home Depot and Lowes within 10 miles and have had great experiences with each. On the other hand, I have had clients' have both good and bad experiences with both companies (especially due to subcontracted work, like Andy mentioned).
As a RealtorĀ® in California, we get a lot of direct contact from Lowes with special promotions and benefits to offer our clients; whereas we don't with Home Depot. It might be a great idea for Home Depot to get on board with the California Association of Realtors, if they haven't considered it yet, as I don't know anyone who wouldn't appreciate a HD Gift Card from their local RealtorsĀ®!
(btw, Hi Andy!)

Hi KonaKid,
You are not the only one. I don't use home depot in Connecticut for the actual labor. You are right in that sometimes they are great and other times terrible. I don't think it is worth the risk.

I don't know why anyone would use Home Depot to do any sort of major work to their home? They sub out everything so that means 1 of 2 things is most likely happening. The subcontractor is taking less money to do the job cause Home Depot is obviously going to take a cut (less likely option) or HD charges more to cover their costs and the sub's costs (more likely option). Take the time to find someone you're comfortable with to do the job and don't take the easy road by going to a huge chain store. If you're willing to part with what usually amounts to over $10k to do any substantial work you should be willing to take the time to do some research.

Here is my story with a home depot toilet repair.
I was doing a bathroom remodel and I thought I would get some help with the simple. So I went to home depot and used their service to install a toilet. I think it was $99 dollars with a $75 non-refundable fee in case the worker could not install it.
The installer came over, looked at the hole in the floor for about 5 minutes and then told me he could not do it because the toilet flange was bad. He Left and I lost $75.
I went to Home Depot again, got the universal flange kit and installed the toilet in about an hour...
The contract out their work, and you have no idea who will come over to do the job...
IMO, do not use Home Depot to contract work, use a private contractor with good references.

Sears, Home Depot and so other major companies all use independent sub contractors for their installations. Some are great, but many have poor skills.
It's your choice to take a chance on using a sub from the stores or hiring your own installer. Knowledgable, skilled contractors save you money in the long run when the job is done right the first time.
For DIY people, Lowes has more personnel than Home Depot, and Sears is a joke. Most employees at Lowes give the customer much more in terms of time and information. However, our store is new.

My experience with Home Depot is about a 50-50 good experience. It seems that half the items I buy there I end up having to take back because of defective items (a toilet that I bought brand new and leaked, or broken items I discovered after opening the package). I used them for custom cut blinds and ended up going back about 5 times because the blinds were cut to different sizes than what I asked (I did measure correctly). That was an issue of who I got to cut the blinds. I too have a Lowe's and Home Depot near each other and Home Depot's prices seem to just beat Lowe's prices every time.

In Southern California, Lowes is the only way to go...did a remodel and ordered from lowes pretty much exclusively... No problems encounted at all, in the rare event that product was dammaged, lowes took it back no questions asked. I live closer to Home depot and for the minor repair it works but the level of service and professionalism for bigger projects, Lowes wins hands down.

I worked for Home depot for 11 years, and switched to L:owe's last year. the difference is like day and night. I have about 23 years experience as a plumber, this is just part time in my retirmemt years. i do have to say we try to bend over backwards to help the customers. I've even gone to their homes on my own time, when there was a problem with the installation, in order to make the correct assessment of what was wrong. Best part of Lowe's. we get a discount on everything. HD only once or twice a year we got 10%. Now it's time to sell my home, so I'm putting in new counter tops. The Zodiac Quartz came out beautiful. The installer, who I never met before did a first class, clean job. Not that I'm touting how wonderful Lowe's is over it's competition, but as an employee they treat us better, so we treat the customer better. I'm only sorry that I have to leave soon to move. Maybe I will come back if retirement gets boring.

And to think some people choose between HD and Lowe's depending on if they're a Tony Stewart or Jimmie Johnson fan. LOL Great inputs!!

Find a good handy man and most of your problems are solved. Home Depot has some excellent How To Books that have helped me do little jobs such as a electrical wall plug, drywall tapeing, faucet repair and installation, toilet rings, tileing and much more, Would I hire any of their workman? I'd have to think about it.

Yes - You are best off to find a good handy man in your area. I used to use Home Depot alot when I first purchased my home. Now I run my own contracting business and I will not even step foor in a HD. Lowes is better hands down. Run don't walk when you come to a HD. You will be glad that you did.

Home Depot messed up on my decking order three times, and most of the time when I go into home depot, I know more about where stuff is than they do, it's sad...I can't stand that place!

I heard HD was spinning off it's installation/labor stuff, so that won't even be an option soon. I think even they knew they had too many problems to manage and were ready to concede to Lowe's.

They could give the stuff away for free. After you allow for the mistakes, errors, and all the time I lose waiting for them, it costs me money to use them.
I fell for it before, but never again.

I trust Home Depot with simple projects; carpeting, pergo floors, etc.
I did my cabinets with them but it took 3 months longer than promised and I still had to go to another company for the counters and still another place to buy the sink as well as be the project manager for it all.
All my other home improvement projects I have been hiring a contractor and putting penalties in place...works better.

Home Depot is like playing craps at the casino -- it's very hit or miss. Everything is subcontracted out and you have no idea who is going to show-up to do the work! We had a complete kitchen rehab throught Home Depot and the contractor who did the quartz counter tops did a great job but another Home Depot sub that did the cabinets was sloppy and did poor work. We complained to Home Depot and all they do is send the same guys back again and again to try to fix the problem with very limited suscess. If your doing a "flip" use Home Depot. If you want it done right use a local specialzed company that has been in business a long time. You might pay more but you are more likely to get quality work by craftsman.

My experience with Home Depot is keep it simple and they will not disappoint. Products are fine but the service sucks. I used Home Depot for replacing my garage door. The service technician had the customer service skills of a ... dunno, but they were bad. Recently, I had a front door on special order and it came in 5 weeks late. They discounted it but then when it was delivered the person was alone. He dragged the heavy door over my driveway and chipped the door frame on the bottom. I have yet to find out if it repairable.

I've been OK there with basic needs, but I find a lot of their stuff to be hit or miss at best.

First, the good: If you know what you're doing and how to do it, they are great. If you are lucky enough to find someone that can help you find something, they're generally pretty decent.
Now the bad: Everything that you depend on them to do is terrible. Their flooring specialists generally know nothing about flooring, and when I was trying to order Pergo through them, I had to come back a dozen times because they kept screwing up the order. It ended up taking two months longer than they said it would because they perpetually screwed it up. I'm so glad I decided not to have their contractors install the flooring. They charged WAY too much! I forget the exact amount, but it was a scam and it would have required me to move all my furniture into storage. I did it myself and just moved the furniture around as I worked.
The lesson here is: learn to do it yourself, and if you need somebody to do it for you, do NOT use home depot.

I really dislike going to HD, takes forever to find anything and then forever waiting in line, it's nice that we still have some local lumber yards, you pay a little more, but it's worth to me!

I worked just about every department for Lowe's for 11 years. I thought I was being biased the first time I went to a Home Depot. It was just unorganized, and no one offered me help me. Plus the orange just get's on my ever lovin nerves! : )
One of the jobs I did was installed sales coordinator, only as a fill in for the regular guy. I was very concerned and worked hard to make sure the customer was happy. But the otherside of the coin, was to make sure our contractor was happy. That way, they want to do more work for you and the only way they get more, is if the customer is happy.
I learned enough to general contract my own home, and get it cheap with my discount! It's on Zillow if you want to buy ; )

My mother is an emplyee of Lowes, so of course she goes there for her discount. My mother decided to build a change her bathroom with the help of a friend. She has a Home Depot credit card and wanted to use it since her balance was low. She and I went to Home Depot loking for material and information, found material no information. We end up at Lowes workshop learning how to properly instal sinks and purchasing everything we needed. Bathroom looks great and works great.

lLowes was a nightmare for us when it came to installing carpeting in a former house. The first guy measured wrong and when they brought the carpet out (finally) it was 1 foot too short for one room and the carpet for the other room was backordered. So the first visit we had our old carpet ripped out and had a bare floor for 2 weeks while waiting for another bolt of that particular carpet to come in. The workmen were immigrants and we could not communicate well. They finished installing the living room but did not install the carpet in the foyer as planned. It was a comedy of errors.
On another occasion, HD, on the other hand, came out, measured, two days later had a beautiful carpet job done (another house). So, I guess it is luck of the draw. At this point I tend to find local contractors and forget the middle man and save some money in the process.
