I've heard a shallow dish of beer will do the trick, is that true?

Use several methods to lessen their effect in the garden. Use beer traps to kill a few, use a wood board placed on the ground, in the daytime overturn it and squash the buggers. Use a flash light at night and hand pick them off and drop into soapy water. Other methods are installing copper edging, using materials around the plants that discourage them getting close, such as roofing shingles.

I hate to even say this, but salt, salt kills them.

Salt also kills the plants. Beer in saucers is the easiest.

BTW, commercial slug pellets that you distribute in gardens and on lawns are harmful to wildlife, especially birds.

They are the most disgusting things - and seeing this post is ironic.. I came home late last night and found several of them inching up my garage door leaving a trail of slime!

Yuk!

It sounds like beer is the best solution, although if my cat or dog gets into the beer, I might have a tipsy pet on my hands. Thanks for the great feedback! (BTW, I hate killing things, but my plants are just ravaged).

Diane -

I hear you - it seems I can't move in our yard w/out stepping on a slug lately.

When I was a kid my Mom paid my brother and I a few cents each to "collect" them in tins half full of salt. Quite a sight. I've heard beer attracts them but thought you still needed the salt. If you find a humane solution - let me know.

the yeast in the beer is what attracts them... and then they drown...

salt will kill them, but also make the ground barren, or difficult for plant life to flourish.

the wooden board that robin suggested is surprisingly effective, large flat stone, works nicely too.

The best product to use is product called Slugo and you can find it Orchard Supply. It does not kill cats or dogs and it works. It is a natural based product. We have been using it for over a year with great success. Happy hunting

Hello
Try diatomaceous earth like you buy for swimming pools.
For a soft bodied insect its like stepping on glass.
Sprinkle around base or make a ring around the base of the plant.
Rub gently onto the plant.
Your will have to renew after rain.

we used the diatimaceous earth (would never have been able to figure out how to spell that.. it's made of crushed sea shells, and the like).. and stopped, because of the need to renew after each rain...

even morning dew made it fairly useless.

Slug bait. They have it at the local HD or Lowes. Costs about $15 a box.

Use with care. Obviously if you have a dog or cat, you don't use it.

Use beer...but only if it's skunky.  Using fresh beer would be a waste. :-)

LOL I pay my two kids 5 cents a snail and 6 cents a slug. The extra penny for slugs is for the slimey carrying charge. I also turned over a couple pots in the garden with a 2" hole at the rim broken out. They seems to love the shady spot in the summer and dry spot in the winter and they are easy to catch that way too.

The best products to use for pest removal in the garden are professional products. yes there are a number of tales that say use beer but the fact is you are taking a chance that damage could happen to expensive plants while you findout that tales are just tales. Most likely someone got caught in the backyard with a beer and ended up using this excuse.

The best method is to use a product that a professional would use. There are many early weed and feed products that should be used early in the spring and adding a product to control grubs, slugs or other general pests to your spreader is a very easy way to improve both the condition  of your soil and rid your garden of pests.

Always remember that working near vegetable gardens requires food safe products. So, read your labels and visit your Agway or local home center a couple weeks before the last frost in your area.

We live in the "frozen" north but use the Scott's program for our lawn.  We have slugs that actually survive quite nicely in 20 below weather.  We use the (not sure this is correct name) Scott's 4 program where we put down something every quarter.  One of them--I think the fall one (needless to say, I supervise and my husband does the work) is the one with the slug killer as well as nutrient to help the grass survive (we live on the bank of a salt, tidal river) the winter.

We use pie pans of beer very effectively.  If you don't want to poison wildlife and pets or worry that they may drink the beer, there are two or three products which are safe for birds, animals and wildlife out there.  They are more expensive, but save your plants.

You don't as you can only keep their numbers down by baiting every few months when the weather is prime for slugs. I been in the gardening business for 18 years and learned there are certain insects that you can't completely get rid of, ants and slugs. You can help lessen the population by clearing out some plants and allowing more sunlight in making it less damp which slugs don't like.
