How, and how much, to upgrade an existing gas fireplace to an electric "auto-start"?

We have two gas fireplaces. One is connected to a wall switch, flip and "insta-flame". The other has the traditional key-in-the-wall to control the gas flow.

What is involved, and how much should it cost, to convert the key-in-the-wall to switch-on-the-wall-insta-flame?

No idea of the cost, but if you follow the link this appears to be a retrofit kit sold by a division of Honeywell.

Below is the dealer locator.

While I haven't seen this done on a fireplace, long long ago I worked at a place where we installed a retrokit electronic ignition for a commercial dryer. Even then the cost of gas was such that it was worth the savings from not having a continuous pilot.

Hi It sounds like you are talking about gas logs, Some brands I sell have options for matchlight or millivolt or pilot style that work with a switch.
You might be able to upgrade. I have never seen a fireplace that did not operate with a switch.
see what you have an re post it.

@ Michael...

Thanks, that helps quite a bit. Looks like a bit of demo to put it in the wall, but we'll see how that plays out.

Funny thing, all the dealers are up in the mountains or out in the boonies. Go figure.

Not really. It's already a gas fireplace, so I don't need to run any gas lines.

Good question...I'm not sure.  But I have run gas lines for dryers [moving from kitchen to spare room] it cost about $300.
I hope that helps:)
