In my area, I've had great luck finding unemployed sub contractors that normally only work on new construction.  The new construction market here has tanked, so they're happy to work at much reduced rates ($25-40 per hour) in order to just pay their bills.  It's worked out great for me.

There are alot of trades men/women that have lost there job and and are willing to work for less than there normal wage. Also you can check out getting appliances/interior changes from places like habitat for humanity. They have appliances, flooring, furniture for a fraction of the cost of department stores.
