How can I distinguish between a "good" and "bad" neighborhood in Alpharetta?

Profile picture for BritishLady
We are a British family looking to move to Alpharetta/Roswell and have a budget of around $500,000. Looking on the internet, it seems you can find amazing homes for this amount, but I am worried about buying in a bad area. What should I look out for and how can I research this from a distance? Thank you.

I suggest you come over and spend some time in the area. You can tell a Realtor what you are looking for but until you look at some homes  and communites with them and give them your opinion of what you see they will not know if it is a fit for you or not.

What is a big yard to some people is a small yard to others. I have taken two or more clients in the same community, some will say the homes are to close others will talk about how private it is.
I can not tell you what your opinion of a community is no more than you can tell me what mine is.

You can research values from across the pond with the help of a good Realtor. A good Realtor will give you a lot of great advice, find a good deal, help you find a good lender, inspector, closing attorney and so on.
After you look some homes and communites with them and say, I like this, hate that, too big, too small and so on they can not know your opinion.

Due your due deligence......I know a family who was from France (and black) and well, they were not prepared for the racism that still persists in GA and yes even in Alpharetta.  If there is ALTA tennis in the neighborhood be prepared for cattiness and in-fightening in the neighborhood.   Alpharetta is a lovely area and has gained a lot more diversity in the past decade.  Make sure you pick a place that has easy access to main roads, they don't build more than 2 lane roads in GA, even in the more densely populated areas, very strange.

Dear British Lady,

I have to assume that by 'bad area' you are referring to crime.  While we all know that crime can occur anywhere there are people living, I have to say that overall crime rates in Alpharetta are very low.

Alpharetta is sought after for the great schools and abundant green space our community has.  As for the best neighborhood fit for you, much would depend on your lifestyle, wants and needs.  Neighborhoods here can range from large subdivisions with very active involvement in the community and sports to smaller neighborhoods with larger lots and neighbors you may only see on walks now-and-then.  Active Adult communities, golf course or an equestrian community like mine.

Certainly any Realtor that lives in the area can help you focus on your wants and need, and find you the best home we have to offer here.

Feel free to check out my map search page at www.thenorthgroup.com and let me know if you have any other questions!
