I believe the best indication is to go to Better Business Bureau and look at the complaints and overall ratings by BBB. The rationale here is that if there have been problems with a lender the BBB will have information listed and if has been resolved to the satisfaction of the borrower. Also, if you request quotes from Zillow.com, you can see if an individual that sends you an offer has an acceptable rating for you to do business with
the lender and the individual that represents the lender. This way you would have several ways to grade the lender and the individual. Good Luck

Christy,
There are many good lenders in Maryland who are members of Zillow.  Take a look at their profiles, contributions and reviews.  That is a start.  Then simply contact a few.
I suggest you work with a lender who is based out of Maryland.  Doing so will insure that he or she knows the Maryland market and has other professionals: title companies etc., that can best serve you.

There are literally dozens of home mortgage lenders in virtually every locale. So how do you find the right lender for you? You have two basic options: you can hire someone (a mortgage broker) to find a lender for you, or you can take the do-it-yourself approach.

OR
Call lenders and ask about their interest rates, points that might be required and other closing costs.

Choose a lender based on who offers the best interest rate, who has the type of mortgage you are looking for and who is willing to work with you.

Hi chrsitysmith1.
What a great question!

Getting a mortgage is one of the biggest financial decisions you will ever make.  You do not want to trust such a big decision to someone that you don't know or that you 'find' on the internet somewhere.

My advice is to find someone in your local marketplace that will educate you and answer any questions you have about mortgages.  Someone who will guide you through the approval process and make it as easy as possible for you.  Someone who will keep you informed throughout every step of the way through closing.  Someone who will actually attend your closing to go over all of the documents with you and make sure that everything goes smoothly.

A professional loan officer will do all of these things and offer competetive rates as well.

The best way to sort through all of the options is to ask friends, family members and your Realtor if they have any recommendations.  Make sure that the Realtor doesn't have any financial interest in referring someone as they are required by law to disclose this fact.

If you ask around, you will undoubtedly get strong opinions - both good and bad to help you with your decision.

Most importantly - go with your gut. Interview a few loan officers and see which ones make you feel the most comfortable and offer the most assistance.  You should be able to determine who has the most current information on trends in the marketplace that might affect you as a homebuyer.

Hope that helps and good luck with your decision!

Jason

christysmith1:  Lenders and loan products are no different than shopping for anything else you will spend your dollars on.  Research and referrals are key to your success when making your choice of lender.
Do you know other industry-related professionals?  Ask them their opinion of area lenders and loan officers.  Have friends that recently purchased a home or refinanced?  Gather those referrals, as well.  Go online and do some research too.  Then compare your lists.  The names showing up multiple times?  There's your best bet for a successful transaction and good service.
Best of luck with your upcoming purchase and transaction.  If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to write.

Plenty of good banks, with good loan officers, throughout Maryland. (Yes, banks do FHA loans also).

How do you find a good anything?  Regardless of how you find them you cannot guarantee they are any good until after your deal has closed.  You have to rely on the same things you would rely on with any transaction.

I will say this-don't go with a referral to a company.  There are good and bad loan officers at any and every company, get referrals to an individual loan officer.  Regardless of what company a loan officer works for, if the Loan Officer is good you will be taken care off!
