I explored trading a little while ago (in New Haven BTW) after my experience buying a condo for my aging parents. Realtors want to sell property that is fresh and updated. NEVER try to renovate a parent's home while they continue to live in it. It is expensive, time consuming, and VERY DISRUPTIVE to the occupants. If your parents have lived there for a couple decades, they see it as home. Despite their need for a smaller space with fewer stairs, you may need to "destroy" their home right while they are living there. Good luck explaining why you are changing that "perfectly good" harvest gold bathroom sink that has been working fine for decades. In buying, it was difficult to find a good first floor condo with no stairs. That's why, when I now need to sell my own first floor, waterview, New Haven condo, I decided to try a swap ad on Craigslist. - No valid response yet but it seemed like a good idea to try. I think the biggest problem is finding the right match.
