If your roof needs replacement for being old, your neighbors who have had the same job done may be a good source to start. (similar house, similar materials and costs)

Im a contractor from Massachusetts. I strongly suggest you get references and call all of them. With us, 95% of our work is in referrals. Find a builder/remodeler with a solid reputation. You can check with the local building inspector and local realtors. Verify with Better Business Bureau that there are no complaints. In Ma. you can check online for any reported problems using the name and licence # of the contractor. They should be licenced and insured. Be sure payments are structured to coincide with the percentage of work completed. If you're in Ma. we would love to give you a quote. Good luck with your project. Â Brian...L&M Custom Builders Â

Try Home Depot. They come to your home and give free estimates. You can call them at 800-813-3004 or via their website; http://www.homedepot-installations.com/
Hope this helps.

Angies List (link removed by moderator) is a great source for reputable contractors. The members post actual reviews of a company's performance. It is not like a rubber stamp from the Better Business Bureau. Remember to check references as well. If you are located in Metro Richmond then we would love to hear from you.

You might try yelp.com. We happen to own a small remodeling firm, and I can tell you that they have fierce algorithms to eliminate false reviews. We've had 3 clients try to review us, and most of them are filtered. (For that matter, you may look at the "filtered" reviews if you want to see all of their reviews.) It can be a pain wading through the contractors b/c they've mushed together cleaning, remodeling, landscape and mechanical contractors. But I think anyone on there is pretty solid and concerned about maintaining their reputation.

The best place to find a contractor is through a personal referral. If you don't know someone who has used the trade you need recently, then call your Realtor. We work with more tradespeople than you can imagine, from rehab property to pre-listing fix-ups. Chances are your realtor has a good referral for you...
You may also check a web-site like Agnies List dot Com for a list of tradespeople to interview, but beware, they are untested!

Talk to some local real estate agents. They know who does the good work and ask friends and neighbors about work they had done and I do like Angies list. Good luck to you.

most 203k consultants can also offer you a list of reputable contractors and work with you to if you like to see that you are treated fairly. Part of their duties as consultants is to protect the public.
