If you do not have an agent, I would recommend you talk to the locals. Independent contractors and home inspectors are a wealth of information. They work on the homes and know how they're built. If you're looking in a specific area I would drive around and look at the signs. Builder signs are all over. Check out the Better Business Bureau site for complaints. Go into the model homes. Talk to the sales people. If you're not from the area you're looking at, I'd go with an agent who is. The builder pays their commission, not you, but to have the expertise on your side is priceless.
