If you do not have an agent, I would recommend you talk to the locals.  Independent contractors and home inspectors are a wealth of information.  They work on the homes and know how they're built.  If you're looking in a specific area I would drive around and look at the signs.  Builder signs are all over.  Check out the Better Business Bureau site for complaints.
Go into the model homes.  Talk to the sales people.
If you're not from the area you're looking at, I'd go with an agent who is.  The builder pays their commission, not you, but to have the expertise on your side is priceless.

Hello!
I am a real estate agent in Albuquerque New Mexico.  I've lived in the area for over 30 years and worked for a local builder for 6 years, so I am familiar with the industry here.  I can help you out with some personal recommendations for builders in the area.  Feel free to get in touch with me.

Thanks!

I suggest for you to contact a local Real Estate agent in the area and they should be able to help you with that question.
