Because as reported this past weekend some Agents do things like post 2200+ listings that are not or never were active...If you look at and follow the links you will see where just 1 Bad Apple Agents can post many thousands of Bad Listings taking advantage of Zillow trying to make it easy for YOU to post your Real listings...

Now if there are 1000 Bad Apple Agents out of 100,000 + Agents how many BAD Listings would that add up to?
Who's responsible for the Bad Apple Agents existing?.. ..Zillow?

Please give this link a look....They currently have over 2200 "listings" on zillow right now. None of which are currently active properties.

This was reported on the weekend and resolved by Tuesday...
Moral...Turn them in and work with Zillow so they can deal with it

Hi John,
Remember when we had the weekly printed Multiple Listing Book, that would already have sold and pending properties mixed in with the actives when they delivered it to us?
Zillow and most consumer sites are a little like that, but with pretty color pictures....
Its good enough until a consumer gets serious enough to ask for professional help, after getting frustrated enough or missing the best houses for them.

One of the very frustrating parts of Zillow is how many old listings appear on the site.    There are several reasons for them remaining on Zillow, and MikeE has addressed them well.     Zillow doesn't have a listing police force checking every listing, but instead depends on agents removing them properly from feeds and/or manually as appropriate (as well as FSBOs removing them as appropriate).   As many don't clean up the loose ends, the site ends up cluttered with expired listings.

Because agents fail to remove their listings from the originating websites.

Zillow periodically refreshes listings from websites and if the home is still active on the originating site, it will continue to show up as active on Zillow.

Another answer is agents who have manually entered listings on Zillow have not removed them. Zillow does not have the ability to know when a property is sold as they don't have access to MLS. They would only know if the listing is updated or the tax feed they receive updates the sold status.
