Dear Tam 325,
My advise for you is to look for an agent, who has experience, a local area agent is important for you to hire someone who is Local-and Ask the agent questions, check out the agents profile. Here at trulia in advise section.
Real Estate agents are "extremely busy", showing homes, meetings, answering emails, previewing homes, preparing contracts, checking other transactions, prospecting making phone calls and making sure everything is running smooth, preparing market reports, advertizing on line...etc The list is endless.
In refence to answering phone calls. If your agent doesn't answer right away be patient him or her must be showing property or at a meeting. Remember we are EXTREMELY busy, everyday, but if you are calling and calling your agent and he or she does not call you at all that day, then thats not a responsible agent.
If you have not found a Realtor to represent you I can find or referred you to a Keller Williams Realtor Associate. In your city.
Just provide me with your contact information and where you want to live.
Good luck finding your home!

I would look for an agent who has experience and knowledge in the city/neighborhood you are looking to purchase in.

After reviewing the existing posts, you really need to make sure there are no language barriers.
The OP was talking about real houses Spence. Not Second Life houses.
I'm with Nic on this one. Add some good CD's in their Truck, and you have an Agent I could do business with. A hot Beast of Burden that speaks my language. Decoration skills, really?

Spencer, with all due respect, if I am out with a client or otherwise tied up with a client, it is a little unrealistic to expect a response to your inquiry in a matter of minutes.
Ideally the best way to identify an agent that fits your needs, is to do a test drive with them. Their words and actions on the phone, at their office, in their car and during the actual home showing are good indicators of how they will fit your needs.
A slickly dressed Lexus driver might give the appearance of professionalism, but looks can be deceptive. Jeans, a pick up and a console full of Rolling Stones cd's are not a sign that an agent lacks professionalism or more importantly, knows their stuff.
As I said, take one out for a spin and a listen before commiting to an impressive fluff act.

You would want to pick someone that is professional and that you have a personal connection with. You have the like the person you choose to work with or it won't be a pleasant experience.
You would want to pick someone that stayed with the zillow rule and didn't self promote.....we are not allowed to give our personal or professional info. That would be considered SPAM

I think it depends on what type of buyer or seller you are.
For me, the agent's responsiveness is paramount. I need someone who will get back to my by email within a few minutes. Their negotiation skills and online marketing expertise are less important, because that's sort of what I do for a living. Their interior design skills and knowledge of how to make my house look more appealing to a potential buyer is important, because I don't have that sense.
I wrote a blog post here based on a speech I gave at the National Association of Realtors conference a few months ago about what the research says that Internet buyers want. Might be interesting to check out.

look for the one you feel most comfortable with and that is genuine.
The one that is mostly answering your questions than giving you the run around

I've worked with 2 agents myself, first one I had to fire because of extreme non-responsiveness. My experience so far has been that they don't do much other than open the door and fill out the paper work when you submit the offer. Every house I looked at so far are found by me on websites like Zillow and the comps are all there on the web. They are all very busy (can't blame them), and really don't have much time to give you advice.

Look for one that's hot.
How criteria do I choose to decide on a real estate agent to work with?
