How do I detect a fraudulent ad?

I'm looking into a property that is also listed on Craigslist.  I called and spoke to the gentleman, he seemed very legit, but we have only ever rented from a property management company, never directly from an owner.

You are wise to cover your bases and ask questions!  Idaho doesn't require property managers to be licensed so you even have to be careful on that front.

If they claim to be the owner, you can check with the Canyon County Tax Assessor's office or your favorite title company to verify that fact.  If you make the check out to the owner directly, that should help minimize your risk.

I know of cases where tenants have claimed to be owners and "sold" the house accepting and cashing earnest money checks on their way out the door.

Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware!

Best of luck

If possible, I would see if the claimed owner is actually able to show you the property. If they can show they have access it would go a long way towards verifying they are who they claim to be.
